PREVENTION SERVICES

Tobacco Prevention: The prevention program includes in its array of programs a strong tobacco prevention program that uses training and technical assistance and policy development technical assistance to help communities throughout the State to develop strategies for tobacco use reduction and cessation through community readiness efforts and through assistance to develop and get implemented policies to reduce tobacco usage. We provide this assistance through the following efforts:

Tobacco Training and Technical Assistance:

  • Coordinate the semi-annual grantee trainings and create the training manuals.
  • Provide orientations for new community coordinators and policy grantees.
  • Provide technical assistance and training on community mobilization and development of local partnerships. This is offered through trainings, or by working with individuals.
  • Help community policy grantees implement the Community Readiness Assessment.  This includes how to implement the tool, scoring surveys, compiling results into a report and then using the information to help select strategies that will be most effective in moving a community to change.
  • Nurture the community policy tobacco prevention network by facilitating the policy grantee forum, facilitating teleconferences, and maintaining contact lists.

Tobacco Policy Technical Assistance:

  • Assist community coordinators to facilitate local clean indoor air and other tobacco policies in the local community.
  • Support the creation of an over all clean indoor air policy plan that includes development, event coordination, educational outreach, and community organizing.
  • Work with communities who have already passed a Clean Indoor Air or Tobacco Pricing ordinance or resolution, to ensure that the policy is monitored after implementation.
  • Provide support to communities who are at an early stage of tobacco policy development and need to carry out community education activities before passing local policy.
  • Work with grantees to build community capacity particularly in rural communities with high levels of tobacco use.
  • Coordinate and participate in statewide and local strategic planning sessions focused on tobacco policy changes.
  • Provide information on CIA activities and policies in other communities.
Provide support to communities pursuing tobacco price increases
